MTV strives to get young people involved in their communities, and in 2005, the channel collaborated with the Inter-American Development Bank’s Youth Program to launch Agentes de Cambio — Agents of Change — a 360-degree program spotlighting young people and celebrities who are making a difference. Since then, Agents of Change has produced more than 100 stories about youth-led projects and celebrity-driven initiatives in the areas of education, employment, environmentalism, health and wellness, and youth engagement. The spots run on Tr3s and MTV Latin America.
Agents of Change seeks to empower and inspire its audience to take action, make a difference and launch new youth-led initiatives. Dedicated microsites and social media pages on Facebook and Twitter assist with these goals; to date, there have also been 10 one-hour shows, five 30-minute shows and over 60 short-form capsules to promote the program.
Agents of Change also works as an incubator of change. Through a partnership with Ashoka, the global association of leading social entrepreneurs, the initiative has raised over $2.5 million to launch over 500 Agents of Change teams in the U.S. and 22 countries in Latin America.
As part of the ongoing Agents of Change initiative, MTV created the MTV Chiuku Award to recognize those in the public eye who are committed to the betterment of their communities and use their influence to become catalysts for effecting change and spreading their message all over the world. Past celebrity recipients include Wyclef Jean, Eva Longoria, Fran Drescher, Shakira, Kelly Osbourne, Ashley Tisdale, Nelly Furtado, DJ Avicii, Cobra Starship, Kudai, DJ David Guetta, Fall Out Boy, Kelly Rowland, Paulina Rubio, Fonseca, Morrissey, Juanes, Wisin & Yandel, Daddy Yankee, Pitbull, 50 Cent, Calle 13, Backstreet Boys and Snoop Lion.
“You reap what you sow, and if you do good things and try to help, your actions will have a positive reaction. We all have what it takes to make a drastic [positive] change, and if we would all participate, we can have a very big impact.”
